Description lsuarezpotts 2004-05-05 08:41:56 UTC
This is an issue to track marketing tasks for 2.0. It does not replace discussion. It is just a tracker.

1.

All, we need to get people to download and test 680 builds. 680 is by no
means ready for nongeek use but does need serious testing and QA'ing.

So, a suggestion. If people say, "How can I help," please ask them to
think about downloading 680, testing it and filing relevant issues. 680
is here:

<http://download.openoffice.org/680/>

and issue-filing guidelines are here:

<http://qa.openoffice.org/>

2.

We also need to start building marketing momentum for 2.0, which will be
the evolved form of 680. There are many distinguishing features of 2.0
but in many ways the most important is its significantly enhanced MSOffice
compatibility. (For a more complete account, see
<http://tools.openoffice.org/releases/q-concept.html>.)

So, what is needed, I should think (in more or less random order):
	* clear statement of why 2.0 is important, in several languages
	* statements on who should download it (everybody) and why
	* synopsis of technology involved
	* coordination of ancillary documentation, user help, etc.

And lots of other things, such as deadline for pre-releases (RCs, say),
press releases, demos, and so on. A demo is particularly useful, esp. one
showing *how* 2.0 would be better than 1.x.x, perhaps something that users
could easily download, or a SWF presso that we can have on marketing page
or in the press kit. And, coordination with the major linux distros...

Ideas?

Sophie responded in http://marketing.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=14200

"Elizabet Matthis and I have just started to work on a features guide for
2.0 based on the specs and other informations. We will do a first draft
that we will submit here for discussion. I would like to use this guide
to do an abstract of new functionnalities in a synoptic way to send to
Ministries and send it also to the newsletter at bureautiquelibre.org.
Another idea was to send memo toolbars as advertisement. Here in french
for 1.1.1 :
http://fr.openoffice.org/Documentation/How-to/writer/barres_texte_OOo11x.sxw
(I think this is also in english on documentation project but I can't
reach it for the moment)."

So, that's a start. We have a fair amount of time but might as well start.

I tried to create a changes log using Writer, but I was not happy with the
result. So I resorted to how I know best.

Will post to dev@marketing, so people can see the differences between the first
(5 July) and second (8 July) 2.0 Features Guide documents.

Replaced all the formatting by styles.
Comment 8 dcarrera 2004-12-01 01:49:51 UTC
I looked through the file more carefully and noticed that it was full of manual
formatting (ie. no styles). In OOo manual formatting looks the same, but makes
HTML export less reliable. Styles have a fairly clean mapping to CSS. On the
other hand, manual formatting is prepresented using <font> tags.

I have replaced almost all of the manual formatting by styles and uploaded a new
file. This new file exports to HTML more cleanly. You can see the output here:

http://website.openoffice.org/tryouts/dcarrera/features/testing.html

The only text I didn't turn into styles were the links.

Cheers,
Daniel.

Here are a few things that I (dancer/Erwin) will work on:

* start preparation of OpenOffice.org 2.0 Beta announcement on
  pr@marketing.openoffice.org

* prepare a user friendly feature list in a similar format as the
on that I did for OpenOffice.org 1.1 including creating a new
  issue for this task

URL of old feature web page:
  http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/features/1.1/index.html

  Link to new issue:
  http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=38632

* encourage people to write articles and blogs about our new
  file format

* write in my blog about OpenOffice.org 2.0 and the new file
  format

Two volunteers, Ron Ness and Valden Longhurst have offered to take care of the
guide to new features. Michael Lim is writing short feature overview.

Valden is presently working on updating the How to Access column. Ron may jump
in after the holidays.

The goal is to have the guide done by _Jan 10_ so it can be translated and other
marketing material created from it in time for the OOo 2.0 Beta release
(scheduled for end of Jan)

Michael is going to write a condensed feature document of just the most
compelling features (based on those found in the guide) to be done by _Jan 15_.
I told Erwin that Michael is going to do this, so Erwin will not do the
"user-friendly feature list" (as was noted in his post Dec 8)

Hi thanks Jacqueline for the excellent final feature guide!

As to the other things:
John: where do we stand with beta product pages?
Me: I can do the download web pages
Elizabeth: The overview is for Final, but would you --or someone-- be willing to draft a summary of the
differences in 2.0? I'm concerned, of course, about the file changes.

thanks
louis

Elizabeth->Louis:
You said: "The overview is for Final, but would you --or someone-- be willing to
draft a summary of the differences in 2.0? I'm concerned, of course, about the
file changes."

Let me correct you:
The feature guide that Sophie and I prepared (with the finishing touches from
several others) ONLY includes the _differences_ between OOo 1.1 and OOo 2.0:
i.e. only new or improved features. The file format change is listed as a feature.

The feature guide is for the Beta release.
The goal was to have the guide complete in time for the Beta release and it is
being localized for that purpose. There will not be a separate guide for Beta or
Final. (Beta is feature complete)

BTW, Michael Lim provided the short feature overview of the most importants
features to the marketing list. That was the last marketing document/collateral
that I was coordinating. I am not working on or coordinating any other material.
The community should feel free to use the feature guide as a basis for creating
marketing material about new features for OOo 2.0.
Comment 20 lsuarezpotts 2005-02-23 07:48:39 UTC
thanks Elizabeth, for the clarification. Jacqueline, do we have Michael's overview? Also, perhaps the
article that Erwin wrote on 2.0 might come in handy. My general interest here is to provide an account
of the differences and why people should be happy.

cheers
louis

A very important feature in the academic tech sector:
Issue 24813
(Latex support)

It works already as a patch, just needs to be included.

I know many people that currently don't see any advantage of OO over MS-Word
("why do you use such incompatible formats"). Acrobat is available for PDF. But
Latex support would be one of the killer arguments to install OO. Mostly our Phd
and Master thesis are written in Latex, so OO with Latex support (incl. Bibtex
export) would be just fine to start.
